- Internet Marketing vs Golf
Recently I met Iain Erskine who is a PGA Golf
Professional. He
sent me this article comparing
the teaching techniques of
teaching golf and teaching
Internet Marketing. There are great
parallels
here that I think you will enjoy. Here is
Iain's
techniques.
"I have several online businesses which run nicely
and the last
few years I have taken to teaching IM. I
am a PGA qualified golf
professional and got into IM
after injury and a successful
offline business. I
still teach golf at least one day a week and
find the
comparison between golfers and Internet
marketers
amazing. If I can explain a little what I
mean I would then be
greatful of your thoughts. This
may help people new to IM.
A new golfer will come to me having read every
magazine going,
watched XYZ DVD and bought new clubs
and putters on a regular
basis.
They will then proceed to ask me to teach them to hit
the ball
straighter and longer in a 40 minute lesson.
I watch them hit a few balls and they go everywhere,
at which
time I observe, the grip is poor, their aim
is all over the
place, the ball is in the wrong
position with regard to their
feet, their posture is
crooked.
I explain that without these basic set up
fundamentals they will
never hit the ball straight
and certainly not in a week, but they
insist on
talking swing planes and ball flights and winning
the
competition next weekend.
I put them on a six week course where we agree - no
magazines,
no DVD's, no comparisons to Tiger. Set
practice on one aspect of
the SET UP each week, and
only when mastered do we move on. Week
One AIM, Week
Two GRIP, etc.
We do not however move on until the previous skill
has been
mastered.
What happens? They start to look like a golfer, the
technical
thoughts become less. The swing
automaticaly improves because
they can stand to the
ball correctly. They are set up like a
golfer.
As they become more proficient I will ask them to
record results
about the game and then target
specific areas. (Who stands at the
driving range with
a driver in their hand when they can't putt).
I will
ask them to focus on a shot they would like to hit,
to
visualise it, then using their NEW SET UP we can
work together
on making it happen.
For me the main problem, getting the focus narrowed,
too much
information available and wanting instant

Ok, so now Internet Marketing
A IM comes to me having read DJK, Affiliate X, black
mask,
adsense for dummies and every other ebook. They
will have spent
a fortune and earned nothing.
I ask them over a similar 40 minute session to think
about and
detail exactly what they have done. Just
like the golfers
variety of shots I get a variety of
projects - " I did some
direct linking" , "I did some
affiliate stuff", "I tried Adsense
but it all went
wrong", "I joined GDI but it didn't work for me"
So I explain that firstly (in my opinion) there is no
way to
earn money in a couple of hours from scratch
with no experience.
I further explain that they are trying to move
into too many
varied projects with no SET UP. I have
to move their focus from
instant riches to long term
strategies, and skills
I will discuss what they enjoy and what appeals to
them about
IM, we need a project they will enjoy. (I
personally cannot be
doing with Adsense so it is
pointless me working on projects
involving it because
it is not for me and I would lose
motivation, just
like it is impossible to teach a golfer who
sees
every shot right to left, to play the ball left to
right,
you take him out of his learning zone.)
Once we have established a project idea, lets assume
they are
going to write and sell their own ebook. We
break down the
skills involved to make that project
successful. What SET UP is
required.
A topic and research,
Writing skills,
A webpage
to sell it from (they have never done this)
Payment
set up
Keyword research for advertising
Adwords
skills
Other traffic driving
skills
Autoresponder
Follow up skills.
This is a brief set up to get the project off the
ground. I set
them a similar programme, giving them
the knowledge (just as i
tell the golfer how to aim
correctly) to go off and learn skill
one
PROPERLY.
When they have mastered that they move on.
Within a few weeks (given a good work ethic) they
have set the
project up for launch, and learned
skills that will never leave
them.
Just like the golfer lowering his handicap steadily
they can now
repeat the same process steadily,
improve their skills and be
more successful.
A golfer needs to practice to get better, You do not
go from a
28 handicap to scratch in a matter of days,
weeks, even months.
That practice needs to be focused
on the correct skills. As you
learn those skills the
faster your improvement and the more
shots you can
play. I am scratch because I repeat that process
more
consistently than most.
In IM the same principles apply, you do not go from
zero to
$10000 a month in a month. You need to take
time to learn the
skills RELATED TO YOUR PROJECT.
Once you have the skills you
practice and improve
them adding new ones along the way.
The promise of instant riches is false just like the
golf
headline break 80 in 10 days - Earn $500,000 and
be free in 10
minutes just does not work.
IM is about building a SUSTAINABLE INCOME FOR YEARS
to do that
just like the golfer you need a good solid
set up. You need to
learn numerous skills. You need
to know exactly what you are
trying to achieve and
you PRACTICE to get better. Once you are
better it
stays for life. I have been a scratch golfer for
20
years plus because I learned the basic skills and
they don't
just leave you.
The successful guys in IM will be scratch at IM for
years to
come.
So to summarize
Identify your faults if you have started in IM
Work on a set up for the project
Break that setup down into individual skills and work
on each
one individually.
Don't move on until you
have got it, if you are struggling ask
for help. (The
Turbo Membership Forum is a great place)
Once you have the set up in place - practice to
improve it
Think Long Term instead of I want x dollars by next
week
I find that it is too easy to give throw away advice.
I used to
say to my golf pupils your " you are not
standing square to the
ball" not understanding that
they had no idea what I meant as
they did not get
golf terminology, so I just left them more
confused.
When offering a tip, it pays to be clear and keep it
simple,
telling someone to build a squeeze page when
they have no idea
what one is or how to use any web
software is no help at all.
I hope this post provides food for thought. I
am looking to
learn more about how the real top guys
get their methods across
so i can further enhance my
teaching and my pupils study.
